Brief overview of the School

Sponsored by Shanghai Xuhui Education Foundation, Shanghai Southwest Weiyu Middle School is a large-scale private secondary school, which consists of three campuses with 80 classes, over 3000 students and more than 300 faculty. Southwest Weiyu is one of the best private secondary schools in Shanghai with high education quality and prestigious social reputation.

Ever since its establishment in 1993, Shanghai Southwest Weiyu Middle School has been successively entitled Shanghai City Civilization Unit, National Excellent Private School, The Civilian-run School Characteristics Construction of Advanced School, Exemplary School for National Teenagers and Children Safety Conduct, Shanghai Exemplary Entity for Moral Education, Shanghai Model School for Code of Conduct, Shanghai Experimental Base for Science and Technology Education, etc.

Brief overview of the International Division

The International Division of the school was established in 2013. The International Division aims to provide a rigorous US Common Core based Curriculum and College Board accredited AP courses in a safe and supportive community conducive to the intellectual, emotional, and physical growth of students. The language of instruction in the International Division is English. Most of our student body are Chinese passport holders, and all of them will go to colleges abroad.

As one of the first 21 pilot high schools all over Shanghai approved by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission to implement international programs for Chinese students, Shanghai Southwest Weiyu Middle School International Division is dedicated to preparing our students for higher education globally with a variety of resources. 

In 2014, the International Division was accredited by College Board with the CEEB Code 694586, gaining eligibility to teach AP courses in school.

In July 2020, the International Division was accredited by Cognia, the parent organization of the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). Cognia offers accreditation and certification, assessment, professional learning, and improvement services. This has marked a new stage for our school’s history.
