The Month of English

It is universally acknowledged that the best way to learn any foreign language is to use it, which is why SWWY has dubbed Dec. “The Month of English” and has spared no efforts in creating all sorts of platforms for students to develop their linguistic capabilities.

On the afternoon of Dec 29, 2021, G9 and G10 students and teachers in SWWY ID gathered together and presented six engaging and entertaining dubbing shows, some fabulous English songs and a thought-provoking English drama written and directed by students themselves to showcase their enthusiasm for and talent in the English language. The audience was very much attracted by the six wonderful dubbing shows performed by the best voices from all six classes in G9 and G10, who demonstrated not just language precision but also originality, creativity and raw human emotion. Everyone enjoyed the English songs which were touching and pleasant to the ear. Both students and faculty members were also very much drawn by the engaging drama! The whole festival was such an enjoyable experience and tons of fun!

Apart from Grade 9 and 10, the 11th graders at SWWY ID also had a wonderful time performing on stage. The English Drama Day aims to encourage the students to show their innate talent and passion for acting. Meanwhile, it is also a good chance for them to practice English communication skills. Each group chose a scene from a movie or TV series and had a 15-minute performance. Despite the intense schedule in December when they had lots of projects and papers, the students were extraordinarily passionate. They managed to remember the lines and set aside time gathering for rehearsals. Their amazing understandings and interpretation of the movies impressed all the audience and judges present. We hope for more platforms enabling the students to display their enthusiasm for English learning.

Moreover，the G12 New Year Gala held on the afternoon of December 28 was definitely an unforgettable memory for all the students and staff. There were seven performances in all, featuring from singing, dancing, Chinese calligraphy and musical instruments playing. The first rap performance ignited enthusiasm of the audience at once, following the rap. The combination of singing and dancing also elevated the delightful atmosphere. All the audience was immersed in the cheerfulness of the gala shows. This gala was a good opportunity to showcase the talents from students as well as releasing their pressure during the application season.

All in all, the English Festival is a form of giving an end of the year and also recording what students have gained in understanding the beauty of the English language throughout the year, it not only provides a platform to show the students’ talents and efforts, but to enhance the core value of our school: to better educate the students for lifelong benefits.
