Highlights of Teaching - CLA:Fei Hua Ling
The Chinese “飞花令”(“Fei Hua Ling” or “Fly Flower Challenge”) is a Chinese language activity that involves selecting a set of words or phrases from a poem, and then taking turns to recite a new line of poetry that includes one of the selected words or phrases. Generally, no more than seven characters are allowed.
Originating from the interest in poetry of the ancient Chinese, “飞花令” was named after the famous line "there is no place without flying flowers in the spring city" in the poem "Cold Food Festival" by Han Hong from the Tang Dynasty.
Students are divided into groups, discussing and memorizing poems related to theme words drawn in each round. They then compete with each other by reciting a line or two from a poem, and the winning team is determined based on correct and non-repeated lines. This activity fosters teamwork and appreciation for classical Chinese poetry.
