Highlights of Teaching - ELA:Individual Creative Project
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
Character Poster
In the third quarter, the students read and studied The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Throughout the lessons, they were required to make notes on the characters in the play in order to produce a character analysis poster on a character of their choosing.
Not only did the students engage with each character and his/her farcical, satirised mannerisms, but they did some exceptional work producing creative and colourful posters.
For the project, they were given a certain amount of creative freedom. They could choose a character analysis, or they could continue the story of their character beyond the play. Some also decided to create a character anecdote, whether taken directly from the play or their own imaginations, whilst staying true to the nature of the character.
Some of the posters have been selected and may be viewed as examples of the students’ overall enthusiasm for and engagement with the text. The activity was fun and most students were motivated to produce something eye-catching and comedic. This is without a doubt a project I would assign to future students for a wide variety of fictional texts.
