Discovering Dunhuang in Shanghai | Art Masterclass Exhibition Visit
On October 24, the Grade 10 and 11 Art Masterclass students of SWWID visited the “Why Dunhuang?” exhibition at China Art Museum. The exhibition, featuring original artifacts, replicas of iconic caves, and murals, is the most comprehensive showcase of Dunhuang’s cultural treasures ever held in Shanghai.
Guided by a lecturer from the Dunhuang Academy, students explored life-sized replicas of six renowned caves, marveling at their historical and artistic significance. Highlights included the 15.8-meter reclining Buddha of the Nirvana Cave, evoking awe and reverence. The exhibition also showcased the history of the legendary Library Cave, whose artifacts were tragically dispersed across multiple nations.
The event profoundly inspired students, offering valuable insights for their upcoming participation in the global art contest "Dunhuang in My Heart." It deepened their appreciation of Dunhuang's artistic legacy and underscored the importance of cultural preservation and innovation. Students expressed their admiration, with some planning future visits to Dunhuang to witness the original caves.
The visit encouraged young artists to connect with their cultural roots, sparking a commitment to heritage protection and fostering creativity grounded in history.
